Simplifying

Simplify your Summer: Travel and Adventure

Author: Lea Pigage

In the land of the midnight sun, summer means adventuring!  While travelling and exploring new places can be a whole lot of fun, sometimes the stress of planning and packing can be a bit overshadowing. Our family is typically out exploring most weekends during the summer, and out of necessity, we have worked to streamline and simplify our packing, unpacking and planning so that we can not be burned out before we even leave town.

Simplifying your adventures can help reduce that mental load and allow you to fully enjoy your experiences.

I want to share with you five ways to make your adventuring easier:

1. Think Once:

Create a packing list for the different types of adventures that you enjoy. For our family, we have one for the cabin, one for camping and another for summertime trips.  As a bonus, you can download a copy of our editable packing list here.  Consider creating a tab in the excel file for each type of adventure. Print a copy and then use a highlighter to cross off items once they are packed. This is a great way to have the kid involved with packing too! Finding items, putting them in the pile and crossing them off the list can be a whole lot of fun! Our kids have been packing their own clothes since they were 3 years old and love it (I’ll share our tips on this in a future article).

2. Pack Light:

One of the easiest ways to simplify your adventuring is to pack light. Focus on bringing versatile clothing pieces that can be layered and work together and only pack items that you know you will actually wear. Stick to items that are easy to wash, dry quickly, don’t show the dirt and work together.

3. Stay Organized:

Keep your stuff organized while adventuring can make a world of difference. Invest in packing cubes or compression bags to keep your clothes neat and tidy in your suitcase. Each person can have their own cube which keeps things tidy AND limits how much each person can bring.  Create a designated spot for important documents like passports and insurance.

4. Embrace Minimalism:

When it comes to adventure gear, less is often more. Instead of packing multiple gadgets and accessories, opt for versatile items that serve multiple purposes. For example, a travel towel can double as a beach blanket, and a lightweight backpack can be used for day trips.

5. Practice Mindfulness:

The key to simplifying your adventures is to be present in the moment. Instead of worrying about the small details or stressing about things that are out of your control, focus on enjoying the experience. Take time to appreciate where you are and who you are with.

For me, streamlining and simplifying our planning and packing process has been a game changer! It allows our whole family to help pack and reduces the mental load that comes with adventuring with three kids and a dog.

You can grab a copy of our free packing list and make it your own. Feel free to edit it to reflect what you like to bring on your adventures!

Happy Trails!

Simplify your Summer series: A Guide to Capsule Wardrobes

Author: Lea Pigage

-As we enter the summer season, many of us are looking to simplify our lives and create more space for what truly matters (hello fun!). One way to do this is by decluttering our wardrobes. I first learned about capsule wardrobes from Courtney Carver's Project 333 method. Project 333 provides a clear system to help streamline your wardrobe and create a capsule collection of versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create a variety of outfits.

What is Project 333 and a Capsule Wardrobe?

Project 333 is a minimalist fashion challenge created by Courtney Carver, where participants select 33 items from their wardrobe (including clothing, accessories, and shoes) and commit to wearing only those items for three months. This approach helps you focus on quality, versatility, and intentionality in your wardrobe choices, ultimately leading to a more streamlined and functional closet.

Benefits of a Capsule Wardrobe:

·      SimplifiedDecision-Making: With a curated collection of key pieces, getting dressed becomes easier and quicker, saving you time and reducing decision fatigue.

·      Clutter-Free Closet: By decluttering and organizing your wardrobe, you can create more space and eliminate visual chaos in your closet.

·      Cost-Effective: Investing in high-quality, versatile pieces for your capsule wardrobe can save you money in the long run by reducing unnecessary purchases.

·      Environmental Impact: A minimalist approach to fashion helps to reduce your environmental footprint. The environmental damage caused by fast fashion is real and we can easily do something about it.

How to Create Your Capsule Wardrobe:

·      Start by decluttering your current wardrobe and identifying pieces that you love, fit well, and suit your personal style.

·      Select 33 items for your capsule wardrobe, including tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, shoes, and accessories.

·      Mix and match these pieces to create a variety of outfits for different occasions, focusing on versatility and cohesion.

·      Store or donate the items not included in your capsule wardrobe to keep your closet clutter-free.

·      Embrace the challenge of wearing only these 33 items for the next three months and see how it simplifies your daily routine.

Taking on the mindset of “I am trying this out as an experiment” can really be helpful. It can be overwhelming, and sometimes even a little sad, to put away the majority of your clothes.  When we try something out as an experiment, that means that it is only for 3 months (or even a 1 month experiment if 3 months seems like too much). Try it out and see what works and what you might shift to make it work for you.

Simplify your Summer: Meals

Author: Lea Pigage

Nourishing your body well during the summer can sometimes get a little challenging. With kids out of school and schedules changing, it can be difficult to stay on top of meal planning. However, with a little bit of organization and some helpful tips, you can simplify your summer meal planning and make sure you and your family are well-fed with nutritious food all season long.

One of the best ways to simplify your summer meal is to plan ahead. Instead of trying to figure out what to make for dinner each day, take an hour or two to plan out your meals for the entire summer. Start by creating a list of meal ideas for each month, along with the corresponding grocery list. This way, you only have to do your meal planning once, and you can easily repeat it for June, July, and August. I often use this tool to help plan out my meals.

To help make this process even easier, Chat GPT, an AI-powered chatbot, can help you generate meal ideas and grocery lists with just a few prompts. Simply enter in the types of meals you want to make (e.g. vegetarian, kid-friendly, quick and easy), and Chat GPT will provide you with a list of meal ideas along with the ingredients you need to buy.

A prompt you can use is:

“Create 1 month of summer dinners that include vegetarian on Mondays and Wednesdays, Taco Tuesdays, BBQ and salad on Thursdays and the weekend meals can be easily made at home or camping. Include grocery lists for each week”.

Another tip is to prep ahead of time. Consider marinating some of your proteins in the sauce and then freezing them. This way, they are ready to throw on the BBQ when you're ready to cook. You can also pre-chop vegetables and portion out snacks ahead of time to make meal prep faster and easier.

For adventure snacks, making a giant batch of healthy energy balls can help ensure the energy levels stay high enough to avoid meltdowns. These delicious bite-sized snacks are packed with nutritious ingredients like oats, nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. They are perfect for taking on hikes, road trips, or any summer adventure.

By taking the time to plan ahead, using tools like Chat GPT, and prep ahead of time, you can simplify your summer meal planning and make sure that you and your family are well-fed and happy all season long.

Simplify your Summer: Planning and Organization

Author: Lea Pigage

For me, a simplified summer means that I get to relax, enjoy my days and even have a little fun. I find that if I am not intentional about setting the stage for the summer, it seems to be non-stop go, go, go.

This is the first of a 4-part series focused on helping you simplify your summer.

Here are four simple tips to help you plan and organize your summer:

1. Create a Summer Bucket List:

One of the most effective ways to prioritize fun is by creating a summer bucket list. Involve your family or friends and list all the activities you, and they, want to do. Then add a star to those top five things you want to make happen. This helps you focus on what’s truly important and ensures everyone has something to look forward to.

2. Map it Out:

Grab a calendar and map out all the big stuff – any trips you are planning, summer camps, work trips, etc. Make sure you include your bucket list activities. A simple printed calendar can be a great tool for map out all the key pieces that you have planned for the summer without getting to bogged down in all of the little stuff. Keep it somewhere you will see it. I tape mine up on the inside of my pantry door.

3. Set Realistic Goals:

Avoid the trap of overcommitting by setting realistic goals. Determine what’s doable within the time and energy you have. Keep your goals flexible, allowing for unexpected changes and leisurely days. Make sure you check in to see how things are going – what is working for you, and what needs to shift.

4. Declutter and Organize Your Home:

Reducing clutter in your home environment can significantly reduce stress. Spend some time at the beginning of the summer to declutter your home. Donate items you no longer need. Put away anything that you don’t need this season and create a designated space for summer essentials like sunscreen, beach towels, and picnic supplies.

When Things Aren't Adding Up, Start Subtracting

Author: Lea Pigage

When things get busy, we can often find ourselves juggling multiple responsibilities, trying to maintain a balance between our professional and personal lives. However, sometimes things seem to just not add up and everything can start to seam harder than it is.

The stress of managing work, family, and personal life can become overwhelming, leaving us feeling drained and unable to be the best version of ourselves. In such situations, it can be time to start subtracting. By simplifying our mindset, calendar, to do list and our stuff, we can live and work within our own capacity.

Here are 5 ways to start subtracting, plus a bonus to help you recharge:

1. Prioritize and Delegate

One of the first steps to simplify your life and work is to prioritize your tasks. Create a list, if you haven’t already. Then determine what is most important, what can be delegated to others, what can wait for later and what can be eliminated. As humans, we often take on too much, trying to do everything ourselves. However, by delegating tasks to our partners, children, or colleagues, we can free up time and energy to focus on what truly matters.

2. Set Boundaries

Setting boundaries is crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Establish clear boundaries between your work and personal life, and communicate them to your colleagues, friends, and family. This may involve setting specific work hours, turning off work notifications during personal time, or designating a specific space for work. By setting boundaries, you can create a more balanced and less stressful life.

3. Declutter Your Space

A cluttered workspace or home can lead to a cluttered mind, making it difficult to focus and be productive. Take some time to declutter your space, getting rid of unnecessary items and organizing the rest. This will not only create a more peaceful environment but also make it easier to find what you need when you need it.

4. Limit Distractions

Distractions can significantly impact our productivity and ability to focus. Identify the distractions in your life and work, such as social media, excessive email checking, or unnecessary meetings, and limit or eliminate them. By reducing distractions, you can increase your focus and productivity, allowing you to live and work within your capacity.

5. Learn to Say No

Sometimes, we take on too many responsibilities, thinking that we can handle everything. However, this can lead to burnout and decreased productivity. Learn to say no to additional tasks or commitments that don't align with your priorities or that exceed your capacity. This can help you maintain a more manageable workload and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

6. Embrace Self-Care

Self-care is essential for maintaining our physical and mental health, which in turn helps us be more present and more effective in our work and personal lives. We sometimes think of self-care as a day at the spa, but self-care can be as simple as making sure you get in your daily walk.  Make time for regular exercise, a healthy diet, and adequate sleep. And if you can, set aside time for hobbies and activities that bring you joy and help you relax. When we take care of ourselves, we can better manage our work and personal lives and the thoughts and feelings that come with it. We can also show up better for those most important to us.

Remember, simplifying your life and work is an ongoing process. It's important to regularly reassess your priorities and make adjustments as needed. By removing the clutter and focusing on what truly matters, you can live and work within your own capacity, leading to a more fulfilling and balanced life. So, when things aren't adding up, start subtracting. Your future self will thank you for it.

From Chaos to Clarity: The Power of Brain Dumping

Author: Lea Pigage

If you are anything like most people I know (including myself), you are juggling multiple responsibilities at work and at home. You want to excel in your career and maintain a fulfilling personal life. This is often a recipe that leads to feeling stressed and overwhelmed. When your brain is full and you don’t know where to begin, taking a few minutes to do a brain dump can help you clear your mind and remember what your priorities are.

Brain dumping is the process of taking all the thoughts swirling around in your head and putting them down on paper. This technique can help you organize your thoughts, prioritize tasks, and reduce mental clutter. By externalizing your thoughts (on paper or in a digital system), you free up mental space and make it easier to focus on the tasks at hand.

To start, find a quiet space where you won't be interrupted. Then turn off all the distractions (pings, sounds, phones, etc.).  Take out a pen and a notebook and start by writing down everything that's on your mind, without editing or censoring yourself. This can include work tasks, personal errands, emotions, worries, ideas, or anything else that's occupying your mental space.

When doing a brain dump, it's important to include all aspects of your life. This means listing work-related tasks such as project deadlines, client meetings, and emails to respond to, as well as personal responsibilities like doctor appointments, kid's activities (or your own), grocery shopping, and household chores. By including both work and home life, you create a whole picture of everything that needs your attention.

Once everything is out of your head and down on your paper, it's time to make sense of the information you've gathered. Start by categorizing your list into different sections, such as work, personal, health, finances, and so on. This will help you identify key areas that require immediate action and prioritize tasks accordingly.

Next, apply filters to sort through the information and identify what's important. Ask yourself questions like:

What tasks are time-sensitive?

What tasks can be delegated or postponed?

What tasks require long-term planning?

What items are within my control, within my influence or out of my control and influence?  For those that you have no control or influence over, let them go.

What tasks are in alignment with my priorities?

By filtering your brain dump, you can create a roadmap for tackling your responsibilities in a structured and efficient manner.

And NOW, it's time to take action. Start by creating a to-do list with the most urgent and important tasks at the top. Break down complex tasks into smaller, more manageable steps to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Set realistic deadlines for each task and track your progress as you work through your list.

In addition to prioritizing tasks, it's important to schedule regular brain dumps to prevent mental clutter from building up. Set aside time each week to review your to-do list, add new tasks and priorities — and remove any that are completed or are no longer important to you.

Boosting Productivity with the Pomodoro Technique

Author: Lea Pigage

In the era of constant distractions and the temptation to multitask, finding effective time management techniques has become increasingly crucial. One technique that has gained popularity in recent years is the Pomodoro Technique. This productivity strategy, developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, focuses on maximizing concentration and minimizing burnout through timed work intervals and regular breaks. This is my favourite technique to us when I am distracted or when I find myself procrastinating.  It helps get me focused on the task at hand and over that hurdle of getting focused on a single task.

Understanding the Pomodoro Technique:

The Pomodoro Technique uses short, focused bursts, typically 25 minutes in length, called "pomodoros." After each pomodoro, you take a short break before starting the next session. After four pomodoros, take a longer break to recharge and rejuvenate.

The Science Behind It:

The effectiveness of the Pomodoro Technique lies in the way our brains function. Research suggests that humans have limited attention spans, and extended periods of intense focus can lead to mental fatigue and decrease productivity. By working in focused bursts, the Pomodoro Technique capitalizes on our brain's ability to maintain concentration over a shorter duration, leading to increased productivity and improved performance.

Steps to Implement the Pomodoro Technique:

a) Plan Your Tasks: Begin by determining which tasks you need to accomplish during your work session. Breaking down larger tasks into smaller, manageable chunks helps maintain motivation and clarity.

b) Set a Timer: Find a timer or use a Pomodoro Technique app to establish a 25-minute work interval. During this time, focus exclusively on the task at hand, eliminating distractions. Close all your computer windows and put your phone on airplane mode.

c) Take Short Breaks: After completing a pomodoro, reward yourself with a 5-minute break. Use this time to stretch, walk around, or indulge in a brief activity that helps recharge your mind.

d) Long Breaks: After every four pomodoros, take a longer break, ideally around 15-30 minutes. This break allows your mind to rest and consolidate the information you've absorbed from previous sessions. And during this longer break, be sure to do something that helps you recharge your batteries.  A walk or a little yoga goes a long way.

Benefits of the Pomodoro Technique:

Increased Focus: By breaking your work into short intervals, the Pomodoro Technique helps foster a deeper focus on the task at hand, reducing the temptation to procrastinate or multitask.

Enhanced Productivity: Working in short bursts increases motivation and prevents burnout. With a clear time frame in mind, tasks become more manageable, boosting productivity and output.

Time Awareness: The Pomodoro Technique heightens your awareness of how you spend your time. Regularly evaluating your work intervals allows you to identify patterns, eliminate time-wasting activities, and make adjustments to improve efficiency.

Improved Work-Life Balance: Implementing the Pomodoro Technique helps avoid overworking and promotes a healthy work-life balance. By incorporating regular breaks, this technique helps prevent exhaustion and improves overall well-being.

In a world full of distractions, finding a way to enhance productivity and maintain focus is paramount. The Pomodoro Technique offers a simple yet powerful strategy to optimize workflow, increase productivity, and promote a healthier work-life balance. By working in predefined intervals and taking regular breaks, you can harness the full potential of your brain, allowing your productivity to soar. Give the Pomodoro Technique a try, and experience a positive change in how you approach your work and manage your time.
